Somewhere around the time of puberty, Jess's hair grew more coarse and started to curl, leaving her mortified and unsure of how to manage it. Her dad, who passed on the curly genes, was sympathetic but believed "bigger is better" when it came to their hair, which wasn't very helpful for the self-conscious 14-year-old who didn't want to stand out.
As Jess grew up, her hatred of her hair didn't dissipate. In 2002, she decided to search for a solution, typing "curly hair" into Google. This led her to the NaturallyCurly website, where she was thrilled to find a whole community of people with the same hair struggles. Jess quickly made many "cyber friends" and started trading hair tips and horror stories.
One day, Jess came across a basic recipe for a hair gel made with flaxseed, and she thought, "Wow, how cool would it be if I could just make my OWN hair gel?" She tried the recipe, and while the results were less than stellar, she was inspired to tweak it, adding other natural ingredients she had learned were good for curly hair.
